MAMALLAPURAM (MAHABALIPURAM), TAMIL NADU

Just two hours out of Chennai, Mamallapuram, or Mahabalipuram as it was formerly known, was the second capital of the Pallava Kings, and was named a World Heritage site in 1995. There are 14 cave temples and eight monolithic rathas. It is believed that most carvings were done between the 5th and 8th centuries under the patronage of Narasimha Varman I & Narasimha Varman II. Besides the various caves, temples and chariots in Mamallapuram, Tiger Cave (5 km north), Crocodile Farm (15 km north) and the School of Sculpture on E. Raja Street are worth a visit.
