TIRUCHIRAPALLI, TAMIL NADU

Trichy, Tiruchi or Tiruchirapalli - howsoever you may call it - with wondrous temples and quaint colonial churches, this pilgrimage town by the Cauvery beckons the curious traveller who loves to wander away from the beaten track.

The abrupt grandeur of a colossal rockface. An ancient temple perched precariously on its head. A holy city spread out at its feet. For 300 years, this has been the most enduring memory of travellers returning to Tiruchirapalli.
Once a stronghold of the mighty Cholas, the Pallavas, the Pandyas and the Vijaynagar rulers were all drawn towards this lively little town on the Cauvery. To the north of the town, on an island in the river, sprawls the Sri Ranganathaswamy shrine - the largest temple complex in the country. The dreamy retreat of Kodaikanal in the Nilgiri Hills lies a short drive beyond.
With its treasure trove of splendid architectural heritage and an excellent local bus service to ferry you around, the temple-town of Trichy - like all temple-towns in India - promises to be a one-of-a-kind experience.
