Sofia, Bulgaria - December 8 to 10, 2006

Bulgarian Flag

Sofia, the capital and largest city of Bulgaria, is located in the western part of Bulgaria, at the foot of the mountain massif Vitosha. It is the administrative, financial, cultural, and industrial centre of the country.
Sofia may not have the grandeur of a great world city, but its tree-lined, frequently cobbled-stone streets are full of absorbing oddities. Being a city that's more than 2,000 years old means that walking through the city center is like a history lesson, with Romans, Byzantines, Bulgarians, Ottoman Turks and Soviet-inspired communists all having left their architectural imprint. Especially lovely are the numerous churches like the St. Alexander Nevski Cathedral, St. Nedelya or the Russian Church St. Nicholai.

Located 117 km away from Sofia to the South is the Rila Monastery, a UNESCO world heritage site. It lies in the very Rila Mountain at 1,147 m above sea-level. Founded in the 10th century, the Rila Monastery is regarded as one of Bulgaria's most important cultural, historical and architectural monuments and it's certainly the most popular tourist site among all monasteries in the country.

Oli and I spent a wonderful weekend in Sofia and at the Rila Monastery, though the weather didn't mean it well (it was cold, rainy and foggy). Nevertheless we enjoyed our stay a lot!

Following you'll find some pictures of Sofia and Rila Monastery - enjoy!
